You can get the access to these “hidden characters” via Characters Map (Windows) and Fontbook (Mac) too, as these typefaces are (mostly) PUA encoded already.

In Adobe Illustrator or InDesign; just open the Window Type Glyphs, it will display the Glyphs panel. By default, this will display all glyphs contained in the font. If you block a flying machine, you can easily find alternative characters to the glyph by changing 'All Letters' to 'Alternatives to Current Selection' in the Show section. For other programs that do not support the OpenType or Glyphs Panel features such as Photoshop, you can use Character Map in Windows to access alternative characters.
